Pam Cox, Member of Parliament for Colchester, has joined a broad group of parliamentary colleagues in signing an amendment to the Universal Credit and Personal Independence Payment Bill.
The amendment, supported by MPs from across the country, supports the need for reform but calls for a pause — to listen more carefully, to consult more widely, and to ensure that changes to the welfare system are made with the full involvement of those most affected.
Pam Cox MP said:
“Over the past few weeks, I’ve heard from many constituents and local organisations who are deeply worried about what these changes could mean for them and their families. I’ve listened carefully to their concerns, and I share their unease.
“I believe in a welfare system that supports people into work wherever possible and protects those who cannot work. But this Bill, as it stands, risks moving too far and too fast – without the full evidence, consultation, or safeguards that such a significant change requires.”
The amendment highlights several areas of concern, including the need for:
more consultation with disabled people and carers
a review of full analysis from the Office for Budget Responsibility on the employment impact of the reforms
completion of a current review of PIP assessments; and completion of full assessments of the impacts on health and care needs
more careful timing of the rollout of additional employment support funding.
greater mitigation of the risks facing poor families
Pam Cox added:
“We all want a system that works better. But we must build it together, with care and with evidence. I hope the Government will take this opportunity to reflect, consult, and return with proposals that command broader confidence.”
The amendment is part of a growing call within Parliament for a more inclusive and transparent approach to welfare reform.
