Pam Cox, the Labour MP for Colchester, made a significant contribution to the House of Commons debate on the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day and Victory over Japan (VJ) Day on 6 May 2025. The debate, which commemorated the end of World War II in Europe and the Pacific, was a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by millions and the enduring importance of peace and unity.

In her speech, Pam Cox highlighted the bravery and resilience of the veterans and civilians who lived through the war. She emphasized the importance of remembering their sacrifices and the lessons learned from that tumultuous period. She also underscored the need for continued support for veterans and their families.

"VE Day and VJ Day are not just historical milestones; they are reminders of the courage and determination of those who fought for our freedom. As we commemorate these anniversaries, we must renew our commitment to supporting our veterans and ensuring that their contributions are never forgotten."

Pam also paid tribute to the significant contributions made by the people of Colchester during World War II.

In her speech, she said,

"Colchester, played a pivotal part in the Second World War: our residents served on the frontline and on the home front; our industry stepped up; and our rivers and coastlines were fortified as part of the Eastern Command Line”.
"As we honour the sacrifices made by those who fought for our freedom 80 years ago, let us also acknowledge the ongoing contributions made by our present armed forces.
“Their commitment to protecting our nation and upholding the values that we hold dear is as vital today as it was during the second world war, and we renew our commitment to them. And, as we heard earlier today, we must also renew our commitment to ending conflicts around the world, from Ukraine to the Middle East.”

Additionally, Pam highlighted the contributions of the Airborne Forces and Gurkha Soldiers, who played a crucial role in the Allied victory.

This week Colchester Town Hall will fly the VE Day Flag and the Pegasus Flag, the flag of the Airborne Forces. The Nepalese community in Colchester will also remember the contribution of Gurkha soldiers by lighting candles on VE Day.

Cox's speech was well-received by her colleagues, who echoed her sentiments and praised the continued contribution of the Gurkha community to the British Armed Forces.
