Families in Colchester are set to benefit from a major investment in end-of-life care, thanks to a new £75 million funding package from the Labour Government.

Local MP Pam Cox has welcomed the news, which will see St Helena Hospice receive £711,249 to upgrade its facilities and improve the support it offers to patients and their loved ones.

“St Helena Hospice does incredible work supporting people with life-limiting conditions and their families,” said Pam. “This funding will make a real difference to the care they can provide, and I’m proud to have helped make the case for it.”

The funding will be used to improve comfort and dignity for patients, with upgrades including specially adapted beds, better technology, and more welcoming spaces like family rooms and communal lounges.

Across England, more than 170 hospices will benefit from the funding—the largest ever investment of its kind. It’s part of Labour’s wider Plan for Change, which aims to move more care into communities and out of hospitals.

Pam added:

“I’ve seen first-hand the compassion and professionalism of the staff at St Helena. This investment is a recognition of their vital work and the difference they make every day.”

Minister for Care Stephen Kinnock also praised the role of hospices, saying:

“People deserve the best care in the best possible environment, especially at the most difficult times. This funding will help hospices continue their vital work and ease pressure on their day-to-day budgets.”
