Great news for Colchester’s heritage lovers! One of our city’s most iconic landmarks, Colchester Castle, is set to receive a major upgrade thanks to a £1.29 million investment from the Labour Government.

This stunning Norman castle, built on the ancient foundations of the Temple of Claudius, has stood proudly for centuries. But like many historic buildings, it’s been facing some serious challenges—especially with water damage caused by poor drainage and outdated guttering.

Thanks to this new funding, those issues will soon be a thing of the past. The project will not only fix the immediate problems but also upgrade the roof and drainage systems to protect the castle for generations to come.

Pam Cox MP: “A Vital Part of Our Heritage”

Local MP Pam Cox welcomed the news with open arms:

“I am delighted that Colchester Castle has received this significant funding boost. Our magnificent Norman castle is a vital part of our heritage and a symbol of our city's rich history.”

She also highlighted how this investment goes beyond bricks and mortar:

“This funding will ensure the castle remains a cherished landmark for residents and visitors alike. It’s a testament to our commitment to preserving our cultural heritage and supporting the local economy.”

Pam also gave a shout-out to Colchester’s vibrant arts and culture scene—from museums and theatres to galleries and live venues—calling them a “thriving part of our local economy.”

A National Commitment to Culture

Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy MP echoed the importance of this investment, saying:

“Arts and culture help us understand the world we live in… They are the building blocks of our world-leading creative industries.”

She emphasized that the Arts Everywhere Fund, which this grant is part of, is about more than just preserving buildings—it’s about creating opportunities, jobs, and growth in communities across the UK.

What’s Next?

This funding is part of a wider £270 million initiative to support cultural venues, museums, libraries, and heritage sites across the country. For Colchester Castle, it means a brighter, drier, and more secure future—ensuring it remains a proud centerpiece of our city’s story.

So next time you stroll through Castle Park or visit the museum, know that big things are happening behind the scenes to keep this historic gem shining.
